Meteor

JoeLectrick dropped a new cosmic adventure of a track. His latest track Meteor had originally debuted as part of CFK Radio: Transmission 1. Now it’s available on all platforms to purchase and stream.

A mix of experimental techno and acid house, this track brings together soaring melodies, quirky video game sounds, a pounding beat, and a groovy acid bassline. Originally envisioned to be more of a peak time/driving techno track, it took on this whole different atmospheric vibe during the production process as the music layered up.

“This track explores the loneliness of traveling through the far reaches of interstellar space. But also it’s about the existential thought that humanity on Earth is sailing through the cosmos completely alone. But then we spot something and it spots us back. So basically it’s about aliens coming to Earth,” says JoeLectrick about his new track.

Originally launched as an exclusive track on Crazy From Kong’s new music video series CFK Radio, Meteor’s visuals, directed by Arne Venema, showcased an aggressive Vaporwave storm above a cyberpunk city skyline. You can check out the music video for Meteor below.

Celestial

Are you ready to blast off among the stars? Sit back and listen to Celestial, and be transported on a journey through time, space, and music. Now available on all platforms.

Story behind the music:

For this track, I wanted to make a synth tune that felt like flying through the clouds. The main melody was something I played around with on my Novation Circuit, while chilling at a coffee shop. I ended up with this airy, uplifting, ambient tune that I kind of filed away for later.

Another day I was trying out doing some 303 bass lines, I thought to give it a try to try sliding it underneath the flying through the clouds tune. I felt like it needed an old school, raw groove with percussion, so I dusted off my old MC-303 and jammed out the drums, trying to go for an old school, Detroit style vibe.

Celestial got it’s debut when I submitted it to Splitwire, a friend’s start up radio show for new music from off beat artists and he included it in the lineup.

In the end, I honestly don’t know how to classify this track. It was one of those things where I just let the music making take me in a direction and it turned into this acid techno track with an ambient twist. It’s also been told to me that this track sounds more towards Italo Disco with Acid House included, making it an Italo Acid track. Either way, let me know where you think this track fits in the realm of genres.

Celestial was made with a Novation Circuit, Cyclone Analogic TT-303, and Roland MC-303.

Mix 002. Chill Techno Eventually Turns Unchill

New DJ mix up on my MixCloud. I was experimenting with layering Vaporwave over Techno and decided to just press record and run with it. Warning: this is an eclectic mix.

Full story of the mix:

I start off with a vaporwave intro from Hong Kong Express before going into the techno. From then on, I originally wanted to forward with a full chill, old school, melodic techno and IDM mix with tracks from B12, Oribital, 808 State, The Black Dog, and Autechre.

Then the journey veered to a Gabriel & Dresden track and immediately took a darker turn, going to some hard techno from Risa Taniguchi and Amelie Lens before veering to one of my own tracks which I would arguably classify as “aggressive trance”.

Throughout, I tried to keep my original concept going of vaporwave over techno, throwing in a couple more bits of tracks from Hong Kong Express before ending with a vaporwave twist for what is already an eclectic techno mix.

Oh yeah, another special vocal song surprise thrown in. Big kudos to anyone who gets far enough in the mix to find out what it is. 😉

I hope you all enjoy this journey!

My First Techno DJ Mix

After weeks of sporadic practicing, lessons, and tutorials, I finally built up the courage to record a DJ mix. So behold! My first ever techno DJ mix. I hope you give it a listen and enjoy. I did this one while a little tipsy on the train ride home after doing early happy hour with two good friends from the good old college days. I’ll admit, it’s a pretty rough mix, but way better than my first attempt at a mix, made on the train ride into the city.

Also, although I went with the DJ controller featured image, I actually mixed this on an iPad using TRAKTOR DJ 2, so it looked more like…

Most of the tracks here I originally picked up on a whim. But some have turned into personal favorites. Of course, I have to admit I did end up sneaking in a couple of non-techno tracks into this techno mix. Why? Because fuck yeah, that’s why. I felt like experimenting a little. That being said, if any of you actually make it far enough into this mix to complain about the random non techno tracks that I slipped in, first I will be sure to offer a personal apology, then next a personal big set of thanks for making it that far into the mix. So there you have it.

Here’s the track list below for those that wanted to know. I hope you all enjoy!

Dance Fight Me

Are you ready to Dance Fight!?

This is a track with a bit of history behind it, actually. I had recently rewatched the famous Jean Claude Van Dance scene in Kickboxer. You know the one…

That dance, of course, ended up turning into a fight on the dance floor.

So it got me thinking about all the times that I’ve seen seen this sort of thing happen in a movie before. A dance scene that turns into a “dance fight”. That is as opposed to a “dance battle”, which is what you see in a movie like You Got Served. I mean like an actual fight on the dancefloor. For instance…

Airplane had a fight that turned into a dance, that turned into a stabbing, that inspired a dance move, that turned into an epic disco duet, that eventually turned back into a fight.

Zoolander had a break dance fight between the model who is so hot right now and an evil DJ.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had a scene where a character needed to dance fight her way past armed guards. I’m sure I’m missing plenty of others.

It also reminded me of a story told by fellow wrestling team member back in High School, of how he was there to witness the most epic brawl between rival wrestling teams that happened at a club during 17 and under night. Members of the two teams were on the dance floor doing their thing, the two team captains bumped into each other. What followed were, in his words, “some of the sickest takedowns he’d ever seen”. As both teams started using their wrestling moves against each other mid dancerfloor, with the music still pumping. One of the guys event pulled off a “granby roll”. Anyone who’s wrestled in high school could probably attest to how sick it would be to pull that off on a dance floor.

So it got me thinking, there needs to be a song dedicated for this exact kind of occasion. Because while it might be cool to see people dropping kicks to the Beegees or Big Mountain or Herbie Hancock, I figured the world needed a dance fight song for dance fighting itself. So I pulled out my newly purchased TT-303 that I been itching to use on a track and I put together the bassline you hear on this track.

Of course, I advise all those listening to use caution when getting their dance fight on to this track, as the people who dance fight in movies are trained professionals and the seniors that brawled in that club were f*cking legends. Still, if there seems to be trouble brewing on the dance floor and things are about to go down, I’d humbly ask all DJs to be ready to “SPIN THIS SHIT!”

Dance Fight Me is available on Bandcamp on March 3, 2021 (303 day for those in the know)

Launching on all other platforms on March 26, 2021. Be sure to show your dance fight moves in a TikTok or IG Reels to this track!

Sunset Highway

I made another funky, little jam on the iKaossilator app. It made me think of a smooth drive towards the sunset. Decided to call it Sunset Highway. Check this out on my SoundCloud.

https://soundcloud.com/joelectrick/sunset-highway-ikaossilator

I’m liking this iKaosillator app for a quickie run and gun style jam when I’m on the go. It’s on my phone or iPad and I can do a live jam recording and export to a wav file or straight to SoundCloud, or I can export a loop with 5 separate track stems to an Ableton file and tweak it up more later.

Let me know what you think of this jam. If people like it enough, I’ll spend some time tweaking it up more and make a proper track for release with it. I’m considering making an EP worth of these tracks and releasing them.

If you hadn’t checked out my first iKaossilator jam, here’s the link…

Amelie Dreams

Neon Electrick Nights 06 now up on my SoundCloud and MixCloud. For my latest jam, I wanted to do something kind of specific and well, I kind of got something else. Read below for the full story.

They say you need to stay on top of the trends so I took to Spotify and listened to a whole bunch of the latest top Techno tracks. In particular, I listened to a bunch of tracks by Belgian DJ Amelie Lens.

Amelie Lens

So, decided that I would try to jam out a driving Techno track in her style. After playing around with my Novation Circuit a bit, I thought I had the tune to make it happen. So I went to recording my “Amelie Lens” inspired techno jam.

Then I listened to what I had just recorded and immediately was thinking that this doesn’t sound much like Amelie Lens. Reminds me more of Amelie the movie starring Audrey Tautou.

Audrey Tautou in probably the most famous shot from Amelie the movie

That famous shot of Audrey Tautou in the cinema from the movie, in particular, got stuck in my head when I listened to the track.

So, with that in mind, I decided to name this tune “Amelie Dreams” and voila! Neon Electrick Nights 06 was born.

If you’ve managed to read this whole story, I hope you will also check out the whole, now on SoundCloud and MixCloud. I’ll upload to YouTube soon.

Let me know what you think. Does it sound like Amelie Lens or remind you more of Amelie the movie?

Neon Electrick Nights 05

It’s Thursday Night, so make sure to make it a Neon Electrick one. This week, I tried a little something different. Instead of a live hardware jam, I made this jam on my iPad, just using the Korg iKaossilator app. I figure a always good to try out new things, even when you’re a robot. I hope you enjoy this funky little House music jam.

Neon Electrick Nights 03
